VBcamps Director and Head Technical Coach Mike Welch was head coach of the 1995 US Olympic Festival Team which three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May, former USA Team Captain Allison Weston (front row far left), and 6 NCAA Division I National Champions were team members. (1995)


Mike Welch was head coach of the USA Youth National Team at the US Olympic Training Center  with Beijing, China Olympic Best Scorer and Silver Medalist Logan Tom.  Took YNT players to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics as part of the Olympic Visitation Program.


NCAA Division I Idaho State University 2003 team had the best season record since 1989


University of North Florida 1999 team was nationally ranked for the 6th consecutive year, won the Peach Belt Athletic Conference
regular season championship for the third consecutive year, won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship, advanced to the NCAA, and had the 3rd highest team GPA in the nation


NCAA Division I Morehead State University team won the 1993 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship and were selected to participate in the prestigious NIVC National Tournament, both were the first in the 25 year history of the program.  The team also had the #1 highest team GPA in the nation!


Helix High School 1990 team (San Diego, CA pictured in Hawaii at the Iolani Classic) were CIF Finalists and won the Grossmont League Championship for the third consecutive year.  The team was listed in the USA Today national rankings, beat the #3 team in the nation, and had a 31-1 record.  The team highlighted Karrie Downey who was a USA Today High School First Team All-American and went on to play for the USA National Team.  Teammate Jennie Long went on to become a collegiate National Champion and All-American.

Mike Welch has extensive camp experience, directing summer camps every year since 1988.

  • Two-time Head Coach of the A1 USA Youth National Team and Head Coach in the US Olympic Festival (5 years in official head and assistant coach positions in the USA National Team development program from 1992-1996), led teams to 1 gold medal and 2 silver medals.  Players included coaching three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May for three summers, Olympic Best Scorer and Silver Medalist Logan Tom, 5 National Player-of-the-Year honorees (Misty May, Logan Tom, Kristen Folkl, Allison Weston, Denise Boylan), numerous USA National Team members, National Champions, and over 40 All-Americans
  • 267 wins in 17 years as a Division I (11) and Division II (6) Head Coach at Idaho State University (3rd on all-time win list), Head Coach at University of North Florida (2nd on all-time win list) and Head Coach at Morehead State University. Recorded 20 win seasons at all three institutions. Earned win number 200 over Pac-10 Oregon in Eugene.
  • 6 nationally ranked seasons, 3 conference championships, 2 conference tournament championships, 4 NCAA Tournament appearances, and 1 NIVC Tournament appearance as a college head coach
  • 2 All-American, 17 All-Region, 43 All-Conference, and 84 Academic All-Conference honorees as a college head coach
  • 5 AVCA Team Academic Awards, including the highest team GPA in the nation out of all NCAA Division I volleyball teams, and two top 3 finishes in the nation in NCAA Division II   
  • 95-22 record and a Top 30 USA Today National Ranking at San Diego, CA Helix High School.  One player earned USA Today All-American, while another player went on to become a collegiate All-American and National Champion
  • A national leader in coach training, Mike has presented three-times at the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Convention and has been published over 10 times in Volleyball Magazine, Coaching Volleyball, Volleyball Monthly and has authored chapters in some books.
  • National committee appointments included the AVCA Division I National Ranking poll (2000 to 2007), the NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committee (2004 to 2006), and member of the Editorial Board for the AVCA's Coaching Volleyball (1998 to 2008).
  • Was Vice President of the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA), event director for CBVA outdoor volleyball tournaments, and a AAA rated player
  • CAP Level III certified by USA Volleyball at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs (first coach to attend and complete the program in the country), and has completed National Strength and Conditioning certification. 
Mike, has a BA degree in Physical Geography from California State University, Chico and an AA degree in business from LA Pierce College.  He has attended graduate school at San Diego State as a graduate assistant, National University, Morehead State University studying Human Behavior, Management and Geography.  Mike has attended multiple team building trainer courses through Project Adventure. He played collegiate club volleyball both Cal State Chico and LA Pierce College; was All-CIF (Los Angeles section), West Valley League MVP, and CIF Champion at Chatsworth High School  (Los Angeles, CA). Mike is an avid mountain biker, trail runner, and skier.  He has competed in many adventure races, mountain bike races, century bike rides, duathlons and triathlons, and was on the National Ski Patrol for 4 seasons.  Mike has been married since Leap Day 1992 to Diane, and has two children.

Mika Robinson

Mika Robinson is the Head Volleyball Coach at Berry College in Georgia.  Mika was named the 2008 SSAC Coach of the Year in just her first year at the helm of the Berry program.  She led the team to the school's first SSAC regular season volleyball championship, while boasting a 23-13 (15-1 SSAC) record.

Previously, she was the Associate Head Coach, Assistant Volleyball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Idaho State University for 3 seasons with Head Coach Mike Welch.  Mika came to ISU after serving as the head coach of the Buchholz High School volleyball team where she had led the team to three-straight district championships.  Her team also received the AVCA Team Academic Award in 2004. As a club coach, she led teams to qualify for Junior Olympics with Gainesville Juniors. Mika is actively involved on the AVCA's Assistant Coach committee, and was on the Board of Directors for the AVCA.  

Mika played her collegiate career at Harvard University as team captain on the NCAA Division I Ivy League team.  She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a B.A. in Psychology in 1996.  Mika has also earned her Masters Degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State University in 2007.  Mika and her husband Clint have a daughter and son.

    Lisa Griffiths became the Head Volleyball Coach at the University of Montana Western in 2011. She is currently finishing up a doctorate degree in kinesiology with a concentration in sport psychology at Michigan State University.  Previously, Lisa was an assistant coach at Idaho State University from 2006-2008 with Head Coach Mike Welch.  She joined the ISU volleyball coaching staff after a successful career as a player at Idaho State. The three-year letter winner played in 82 matches and 272 games for the Bengals from 2003-05. She collected 968 assists, 360 digs, and 36 service aces in her three season career cut short by an injury. While at ISU, Lisa was also successful in the classroom, receiving Big Sky All-Academic honors three times.  A native of Riverside, California, Lisa also had an impressive career as a four-time All-Ivy League selection and All-CIF performer for Riverside Poly (CA) High School. 

    Lisa was selected as the 2006 Outstanding Physical Education Major of the Year from Idaho State University by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Lisa graduated from Idaho State with a master's degree in athletic administration, bachelor's degree in physical education, and a second bachelor's degree in mathematics.  She is currently working on her doctorate degree in Sports Psychology at Michigan State University.  Lisa is married to Mikel Griffiths.

    Rob Holley has been select as the Head Coach for the 2011 Florida High Performance Boys National Youth Team (Florida Region) for the 2010 and 2011 HP Championships. During the 2010 tournament in Wisconsin Dells, WI, his team finished fourth. This year, he will lead Team Florida against an international field in Tucson, AZ.

    Rob Holley is the Boys Volleyball Coordinator for the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Club and head coach for the Boys 14's. He has also coached the Girls 18's team for the past two seasons and is a private lessons instructor specializing in setting.  Rob has been selected as the Head Coach for the 2011 Florida High Performance Boys National Youth Team.  Prior to JJVA, Coach Holley was the Head Boy's Volleyball Coach at The Bolles School, starting the boys program in 2004.

    As a college coach, he was an Assistant Volleyball Coach at Florida Southern University for two seasons. He served as the Interim Head Volleyball Coach at the University of North Florida, and was the Assistant Volleyball Coach for two seasons with Head Coach Mike Welch, helping lead the team to 2 Peach Belt Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships, advancing to the NCAA Tournament and nationally ranked both years.  Rob also served from 1992-99 as head coach of the University of Kentucky's men's volleyball club which was nationally ranked all seven years. The team finished in the Elite Eight at the NIRSA National Championships in 1999, in the top twenty in 1992, 1995, & 1998, and were the SEC Conference Champions in 1993.   His coaching experience also includes technical advisor for the All Air Force Team, head coach for several club teams, and Director of Holleys Volleys: The Volleyball Company (travel camps and clinics).  Rob had been a USAV Regional Referee, FIVB Line Judge, and State Rated College Referee.
       Rob's coaching career began as an assistant coach at Eastern Kentucky University (while Mike Welch was the Head Coach at Morehead State University in the same conference), where he earned his bachelor's degree in Sports Administration with a minor in Coaching Theory (Volleyball). 

    As a former indoor player he played USAV at the AA Open for various clubs as a setter and right side. On the beach, he competed on the EVA, Molson, and AVP tours.

    Off the court, Rob is an avid surfer and loves surfboard design.  He is the former Director of Surf Operations for EPIC Surf Ministries, were he coached and directed EPIC Surf Camps and created the EPIC Surf League.  He resides in Orange Park, FL with his wife, Mary (also a volleyball coach) and son, Hunter.

    Kim Lester

    In 10 seasons at San Diego Mesa College, Kim Lester has culminated an overall record of 219-74 giving her an impressive .747 winning percentage and an unprecedented 7 conference championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2012).  2012 was no different finishing once again as PCAC Champions while being ranked #10 in California.  Overall, Kim's success as a college head coach has earned her the prestigious California Community College Coach of the Year award and 3 PCAC Coach of the Year honors.

    The 2004 Mesa Women's Volleyball team completed its highest finish in the program's history finishing second in the state. In 2006, the Olympians qualified for the State Championship again and finished fourth.

    Prior to coaching at SD Mesa, she served as Assistant Volleyball Coach at The University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has also successfully coached as either Assistant or Head Coach at Idaho State University (with Head Coach Mike Welch), the University of Oklahoma, Saddleback College, San Diego City College, and Southwestern College. In these assignments, she has been known for her emphasis on developing good students as well as good athletes. She earned "Coach of the Year" honors at Saddleback College where her team finished 2nd in the state. She is also known for developing winning teams, resulting in numerous championships and titles.

    Kim played collegiately at San Diego State University (Mike Welch was an assistant coach at SDSU during Kim's freshman year), helping lead her team to the NCAA Sweet 16.  Kim was a team captain. She earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from SDSU, and a Masters in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University.  Kim is married, and has a daughter.

    Jamie Ivers

    Jamie Ivers, as Head Coach at Grossmont College in San Diego, led the team to be Champions of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference three consecutive years in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  She was honored as PCAC Coach of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012.  In 2011, Jamie received the prestigious AVCA Two Year College Regional Coach of the Year award for the Southwest Region and was also named the CCCAA All-Southern California Co-Coach of the Year.

    In 2004, as an assistant coach, she helped guide the San Diego Mesa College team to finish as Runner Up in the California Junior College Championships and were undefeated PCAC Champs in 2004-05.  Previously, Jamie was an assistant volleyball coach at NCAA Division I Idaho State University with Head Coach Mike Welch.  She helped lead the ISU squad to its first 20 win season in 14 years.  Jamie was also the top assistant at NCAA Division II Adams State University. 

    As a beach player, she won the prestigious Manhattan Open in 2000 and earned her AAA rating.  

    Jamie has a BA degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Fullerton, where she was also an all-conference performer on the Titan volleyball team.  She earned a second Masters Degree in Physical Education with Azusa Pacific University, and has an M.A. from National University in Cross-Cultural Teaching.  Jamie is married and has a daughter.

    Denise Parker is in her second year as Head Coach of the Pinnacle Tahoe Volleyball Club 18-1 Team, and third year coaching with the club.  She has college coaching experience at both Bethany College and Cabrillo College as an Assistant Coach.

    Denise has extensive experience as a youth and high school level coach.  As a high school coach, she was the Head Varsity Coach at San Lorenzo Valley High School for 6 years, and spent 11 years coaching various teams in the Lake Tahoe area at Truckee High School and North Tahoe High School.   Besides coaching the past 3 years with Pinnacle Tahoe Volleyball Club, Denise previously coached 3 years with Club Truckee (the predecessor to Pinnacle Tahoe) and 6 more years with Santa Cruz Mtn. Volleyball Club.

    As a player, she was a 3 time MVP as Middle Blocker of the UC Santa Cruz Volleyball Team, and was the UC Santa Cruz Female Athlete of the Year.

    Denise has a BA degree in biology from UC Santa Cruz.  She has NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, NFHS and NSCA Strength and Conditioning, NFHS Concussion in Sports, and CPR/First Aid/AED certifications.   Denise is married, loves to work out at CrossFit, and live the Truckee-Tahoe lifestyle.

    Carrie DeMange

    As a college player and starting middle blocker, Carrie was one of the most decorated at Duke University.  The 3 time All-American was the 2007 ACC Player of the Year and still holds the ACC's all-time career kill record.

    Following her impressive playing career, Carrie moved into the coaching ranks as the Director of Operations at Duke and coached at Triangle Volleyball Club in North Carolina.  She then moved back to her hometown and became the volunteer assistant coach with University of Dayton and coached at Dayton Juniors.

    Before moving to Lake Tahoe, she was also the 2011 Assistant Varsity Coach at Centerville High School (OH) and 2010-2011 Head 15’s Volleyball Coach at Air City Chicks Volleyball Club (OH).

    Now living her dream as a Tahoe City (CA) resident, Carrie is both the Varsity head coach at North Tahoe High School and the 16-1 head coach with Pinnacle Tahoe Volleyball Club.

    Carrie graduated from Duke University with a degree in Sociology and a certificate in Markets and Management, and earned her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Dayton while she was a Graduate Assistant for the management and marketing department.  Carrie has both USA Volleyball IMPACT and NFHS Certification.

    Jody Garry

    Cal State Monterey Bay

    As Head Coach at Cal State Monterey Bay, Jody Garry led the volleyball program to its first-ever national rankings and first All-American honoree during the 2010 season. Prior to CSUMB, Garry served as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach at Washington State University in the prestigious Pac-10 Conference for three years (2004-2006). In 2003, Garry spent one season at Idaho State University as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator with Head Coach Mike Welch. The Bengals finished the season with an overall 20-9 record. It was the best season in over a decade for the ISU volleyball program and earned the squad a third place finish in the Big Sky Conference. In 2002, Garry was the top assistant at the University of South Dakota where she helped lead the team to a 16-win season, the most wins in 20 years for the USD program. Her previous collegiate head coaching experience was at NCAA Division II Adams State College in 2001. Garry coached at Golden West College in 2000, where she assisted head coach Albert Gasparian to the program's 18th-straight state championship. Garry began her coaching career as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Saint Mary's College (Moraga) from 1997-1999.

     

    Ten years after Camp Director Mike Welch graduated Chatsworth (CA) High School, Jody became an All-CIF and L.A. Valley All-Star MVP at Chatsworth (CA) High School.  Jody and Mike first met as she spent a summer as an intern for USA Volleyball in Colorado Springs and worked with the USA Youth National Team while Mike was Head Coach. Jody was a two-time team captain and earned first team All-North Central Conference honors at University of North Dakota.  An AAA-rated beach volleyball player, Garry spent the summer of 1997 touring professionally in Italy.  She also competed with her playing partner and VBcamps staff member Jamie Ivers in qualifying tournaments for Beach Volleyball America (BVA). She received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from North Dakota and a Masters degree from St. Mary's College (CA). Jody and her husband Kirby, have three children, Noah (6), Ben (4) and Addy (2).

    Veteran NCAA Division I College Coach

    Burt Fuller has an extensive background as a college coach, including being the head coach at nationally ranked Utah State University, and assistant coach at both UCLA and Utah.

    While the head coach at Utah State, Burt led the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances and a national ranking.   Additionally, he chalked up two 20-win seasons, coached two All-Americans (Erin Cartwright-Davis and Zuzana Cernianska) and 10 all-league selections. The Aggies turned in a 21-13 record in 2005, finishing second in the Western Athletic Conference. They also took second in the WAC Tournament and earned their second NCAA Tournament berth that year. Utah State's other NCAA Tourney showing came in Fuller's first year at the helm. In 2001, the team recorded a 20-11 mark and went 12-6 in Big West play. The Aggies opened the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 win over No. 19-ranked Brigham Young. The 2001 squad finished its campaign ranked No. 21 in the final AVCA poll. Fuller coached five all-league honorees that year, the most on one team in USU history.

    As an assistant at the University of Utah, helped lead the 2006 Utes to a 28-4 record, which included a 16-0 conference slate and a second round NCAA Tournament appearance. The next year, he coached a Utah squad that went 26-6 overall, won the MWC title with a 14-2 mark and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

    Fuller was a long-time assistant at national power UCLA. In his seven seasons in Westwood, Calif., the Bruins went to the NCAA Tournament six times. UCLA finished second in 1994 and made two appearances in the regional final. His 2000 team finished No. 7 in the country. While at UCLA, he helped coach 23 All-Pac-10 selections and five All-Americans.

    Fuller's first head coaching job was with Los Angeles Pierce Junior College where he coached the women's team in 1992 and 1993. He was also an assistant on the men's team, helping them to a state title in 1992 and a runner-up finish in 1994. He also has stints as an assistant at Fresno State (1989) and Chico State (1985). Other coaching endeavors for Fuller include two years at Los Altos (Calif.) High School where he was named Central Coast Section Coach of the Year in 1998. He was also head coach of the USA Maccabiah Team in 1997 that won the USA's first-ever gold medal in volleyball at the World Games. In 2005, he served as the Intermountain Region Youth Team coach, guiding it to a championship at the 2005 Global Challenge. Fuller earned his recreation management degree from Chico State in 1986 and was a member of the men's volleyball program from 1984-85. Prior to that he obtained his associate of arts degree from Los Angeles Pierce Junior College in 1982. As a player at LA Pierce JC, he played middle blocker during the 1981 season and led his team to the state tournament in 1982 as an all-conference setter.

    Joyce is the Club Director and has coached Club Idaho for the past 10 years in Boise, Idaho.   She oversees the operations for 21 teams.  Joyce is the Club Recruiter for College scholarships and teaches seminars.  Previously, she was the Director and coach for all volleyball and basketball clinics at the former Rocky Mountain Fitness in Eagle, Idaho.  Additionally, Joyce directs league games for women’s and coed.  Joyce was also the Director and coach for Club Idaho NW for 5 years in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.  Her diverse coaching experience spans coaching all age groups.

    Joyce was a national tournament Director and the Director for 21 volleyball teams. Joyce was a High School coach, taught volleyball, basketball, diving, and track. Joyce attended BYU where she played basketball and ran track while majoring in Communications and Business Finance.  She is married with 5 children.
